Projects

Transit Projects

Balfour Beatty Rail was selected as part of the Denver Transit Partners (DTP) team by the Denver Regional Transportation District (Denver RTD) to construct the 46-year, multi-billion dollar Eagle P3 commuter rail project.[11] The company's roles on the project include a 50-percent share of the engineering, procurement and construction contract, as well as a 33-percent share in the operations and maintenance contract.[11]

The Gold Line project in Los Angeles was a joint venture with Steiny and Co. It involved the extension of rail line, along with the installation and testing of all system components. The project, which wrapped up in November 2009, begins at the southern limit of the Los Angeles Union Station and runs to Pomona and Atlantic.[12]

The Broad Street Subway/signal system upgrade project formed part of Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc.'s acquisition of ABC-NACO's Signaling Division in 2001. This project entailed the design and installation of a signal system in one of the country’s oldest subway systems, built in the 1920s. The job was completed in 2007.[13]

Balfour Beatty Rail was a major subcontractor for sister company Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. and joint venture partner Jay Cashman on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Greenbush Old Colony Commuter Rail Line project in Boston. Completed in October 2007, the project featured an 18-mile rail line with 28 grade crossings.[14]

Balfour Beatty Rail completed the Burlingame Station project in August 2008. The team performed wiring in the station and two miles of trackwork reconstruction. Shimmick Construction of Oakland, CA, was a joint venture partner.[15]

The maintenance contract for the Alameda Corridor, which runs through 2012, includes track, signal, communications and right-of-way maintenance. Metroplex Corp., a Balfour Beatty company, built the trackwork for the Alameda Corridor freight expressway linking Long Beach, CA, and Los Angeles to the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe and Union Pacific rail yards near downtown Los Angeles. The railway opened in April 2002.[16]

Rail Services Projects

In 2007, the Houston office constructed 88,000 track feet of rail, along with 48 turnouts at the Union Pacific Intermodal Yard in San Antonio, TX.[17]

The Rail Services team from the Gillette, WY, office installed 11.5 miles of new ribbon rail for the Arch Coal Black Thunder Mine near Wright, WY, in 2008. The job included loop track that takes coal trains over a scale to certify their weight.[18]

Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc. was contracted to install about 65 track miles of materials supplied by Kansas City Southern. The job, which ran from Victoria to Rosenburg, TX, was completed in the spring of 2009.[19]

The Rail Services team installed more than 850 bridge timbers for the South Branch Valley Railroad on a wooden trestle bridge more than 1,000 feet long. The project in Romney, WV, also called for installation of 60 bridge timbers on another trestle bridge. The team completed work in 2007.[20]
